Foreword: When I decided to study architecture I came into the course with an idealistic mind of designing something that enables me to look after people indirectly and being in this studio allowed me to achieve it. Personally, this semester has been the most valuable studio that I’ve ever been in as I was able to accomplish what I love doing with a group of friends. To be able to collaborate with various professions and to fully immerse ourselves in producing the furniture for the HOUSE was priceless, and knowing the end result and the future of the HOUSE was highly motivating for me as well thus made me look forward to completing the project even when there were periods of stress and frustration. Moreover, to know that the HOUSE will eventually be someone elses makes me look forward to seeing the fully finished result. Funnily enough, I still remember my final crit for first year - my tutor bluntly told us that none of our designs will ever become a reality, which is ironic considering that I had the priviledge to create parts of furniture with my group Big West House Studio | Kimberley Kiera Hui |2

and was able to be on site to watch the whole process unfold.

Brief: In collaboration with the Big West Festival in Footscray and Architects from TORAFU Japan, we are given the task of creating furniture that challenges uses of space. Nonetheless, being a design-make studio, we are also invited to question the potentials of furnniture and how their functions could be merged with furniture as well.

Part I: Site research in Footscray.

Big West House Studio | Kimberley Kiera Hui |4

Aim: Having not been to Footscray for a long time, I researched a bit about the community’s culture through the lens of Alice Pung’s Memoir “The Unpolished Gem” where it described her family - newly immigrated from Cambodia adapting their lifestyle to Footscray.

Big West House Studio | Kimberley Kiera Hui |81

Inspired by traditional Islamic Mashrabiya designs our window space aims to act as an extension to the house and provide a flexible space. Folding shutters have been designed to suit various needs and can be adjusted to allow for maximum natural light, air and can be completely opened to provide a connection to the front spaces of the house. Moreover, the pattern of the Window Extension is echoed throughout the house in other window shutters and the kitchen, thus reinforcing the unity within the design.

Big West House Studio | Kimberley Kiera Hui |84

To take advantage of unused space, a hanging environment has been created in the dormer window on the mezzanine, using a transformable hammock facing the skylight to form a floating haven. The hammock facilitates the filtering of soft light into the space as it is pulled tightly shut to form a shade for the window. Using the custom designed rail and pulley system, the rope can be released, allowing the curtain to seamlessly form a swooping hammock, providing a secluded alcove perfect for relaxation.

HOUSE is a prototype compact dwelling, which also works as a stage set, a community workshop venue and hub for the Big West Festival. The building has constructed from two prefabricated modules, delivered by truck and craned into place. After the festival, HOUSE will be carefully numbered, taken apart and reassembled as a small family home.

1. ENTRY The space provides a point of access, preparation as you move over the undulating platforms, a place of permanence and security on the elevated landing and an extension of the threshold as the interior flows outside aided by the opening of the large sliding ‘sometimes door’.

2. BATHROOM

A social space is created through the openness of the program; use it as a passageway, a seat, a washroom, or make it private and intimate by closing the doors. The sliding screens ensure the flexibility of the Bathroom as a transition space; we wanted to challenge what a Bathroom is and give back to the HOUSE.

Covered Area

Inspired by Hawker carts, this kitchen unit is designed around the simple functionality and eclecticism of the street food carts. Complete with wheels and handles, its easy mobility makes it ideal for small house living. It enables simultaneous indoor and outdoor use, enhancing communal living for its occupants. This moving kitchen aims to diversify the traditional idea of a domestic kitchen.

4. STAIRS

The stairs of the Big West House are about modularity, flexibility, and functionality. Each modular stair is placed on a specially designed storage box in order to create the ascent of the whole stair. These boxes give further function to the stairs, as the boxes can be used for storage as well as the extended treads. The stairs can be rearranged in different configurations or even taken outside.

The dwelling has four rooms of different sizes plus a mezzanine space. The function of these spaces is not fixed and can be rearranged by the occupants. Customised furniture pieces have been designed to add a further layer of flexibility, expression and identity. Generous eaves and a large covered external space allow the internal space to extend outside, and the ability for future rooms to be easily added within the overall volume. The footprint of the house is 80m2, allowing multiple dwellings to easily fit on standard suburban sites with shared landscape spaces in-between.
